2nd Grade: Continents and Oceans

I've had a request for technology integration ideas that address the continents and oceans. Let's see exactly what the TEKS say... SS 2.6A- "Identify major landforms and bodies of water, including each of the continents and each of the oceans, on maps and globes."  Got it!  I LOVED teaching continents and oceans when I taught second grade.  I remember I happened to find some place mats that had blank world maps on them and the students labeled them with dry erase markers!  I'm sure there's a more formal mat out there by now!   Just in case you'd like to have your students complete the tech version of that activity, check this out...

Click here to access:  Google Drawing- Label the Continents and Oceans

This is a blank map in Google Drawing.  Students simply type the correct continent and ocean in the corresponding space and that is all! (Good assessment! No word bank provided!) This is a Google Drawing so it is easily assignable in Google Classroom.  Thank you to @TechCoachCisco for sharing this file with me!  Click here to access a version of this activity in which students drag and drop labels in the spaces instead of having to type the words from memory. This would give them a word bank to choose from!

Below you will see the PowerPoint version of the same activity.  Looks a little different but still has the same objective.  This one has the labels....

On the same note, click here to access the PowerPoint activity that in a simple blank map.  Students will have the freedom to make their own labels using shapes, text boxes, word art, etc.  I like this one a lot because students can be a little creative with their labeling!  Remember to use these files you will need to make a copy of them.  The PowerPoint files can be used as a whole group activity if you'd like.  You can have students come up to the computer and drag and drop in the appropriate places while the rest look on at the projected image.  (Don't actually "run" the slideshow.  Students interact with it in its editable mode.)  Or you can make a copy for each of your students and save them in a location for students to access during stations or in the lab.  Hope that makes sense!

There are several resources online that give students the ability to practice identifying continents and oceans!  Here are a couple of them...
Sheppard Software: All About World Geography
Now if you REALLY want your students to learn the continents and oceans you could always do something like this:  Divide your students up into groups of 3-4.  Let their creativity shine and have them draw a large world map on butcher paper or poster board. (If you have any who are hesitant to tackle the drawing of the map, you could always project a map on your screen instead."  Then video record your students presenting a weather report-like presentation in which they are teaching the audience where the continents and oceans are. They will need a little time to come up with a script.  This is kind of like the PSA idea in my previous post.   This is my favorite idea ever!  The creative opportunities are endless with this one. Collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking are definitely encouraged!  Imagine how much more meaningful this will be for your students instead of just completing a worksheet.

Speaking of movies....  this one will stay with your students for a while!

Don't forget that Brainpop has a video called "Continents of the World".

Brainpop: Continents of the World
Brainpop Jr. has "Continents and Oceans".

Brainpop Jr: Continents and Oceans
Brainpop Jr. also has a Continents and Oceans "Sortify" game.  To me, this one is a little challenging! It includes countries also.  This would be an awesome challenge for students.  They could work together with a partner... use a map as a resource... it would definitely keep them busy!  (Note: Brainpop has the Sortify game too.  It's a little harder.)

Brainpop Jr. Sortify Game!
Also remember to access our district's Digital Resources via CMS.  Remember that you can click on the curriculum unit topic at the top of the KUD and it will send you straight to that unit's Digital Resource page.  There are many resources there too and now many of the web-based tools have Google Classroom buttons that will allow you to assign the tool to your students in Google Classroom!  That is a super awesome addition to our digital resources!!  WOW!

OK WHEW!  I feel like I just talked your ear off!  I hope you will find something here that interests you.  If you have any trouble accessing any of the files, please do not hesitate to contact me!  And if there is anything you need my help with--- maybe developing the continents and oceans weather report-like group project--- just let me know!  I am here to help!  (And so excited about the continents and oceans!)
