PK-5- Ozobot Resources for You

Hello and happy Wednesday! (Two more days, two more days until SpRiNg BrEaK!! YAY!)  Before we head off for the break I wanted to share this resource with you.  If you follow me on Twitter, (@sunshinytech), you may have seen Mrs. Gracia's Kindergarten class having a blast exploring the super awesome Ozobots!  (Now, don't tune me out because I said "Kindergarten".... Everyone stay with me, because I promise you will get something out of this no matter which grade level you teach.  😉)

Let's take a peek at what we did in case you missed it....

Student watches ozobot follow the line on the heart she drew.
First, students explored by drawing shapes on butcher paper and letting the Ozobot follow the line.

Students watch ozobot follow the line matching the name of the shape to the picture of the shape.
After exploring, students drew lines to the matching shape and let Ozobot follow the line.

Note, at the Kinder level we started off simply by introducing black lines only... no color codes yet!

The following week, we had our second lesson.  Take a look...

Students colored a code and watched the Ozobot go, go, go!

We first introduced color codes with three colors, then four.
Keep in mind, when we introduced the color codes, again, we kept it simple.  We only showed them 3 codes each- snail, turbo, nitro boost, then tornado, zigzag, and spin.

Notice, we used shapes because the students were reviewing 2D shapes and studying 3D shapes.

Let's talk about curriculum integration... First of all, I firmly believe with all of my heart 💗 that it is NOT a bad idea to introduce Ozobots in your classroom simply for the sake of giving your students the opportunity to learn how to code!  Coding helps to develop communication, critical thinking and creativity skills.  In this case, it is important and exciting for students to realize that the color codes control the Ozobots, and THEY can control the color codes.  Imagine the connection 💡 that takes place when they visualize what they want the Ozobot to do and make it a reality... definite creativity and critical thinking happening there!

Next, there are ways to integrate Ozobots into your curriculum as you've seen here.  Ozobots follow lines.  Your students can draw lines that connect... vocabulary words to definitions, events in order, letters, words & numbers in sequence, lines on a map, steps in a cycle, producer to consumer.... I could go on and on!

I hope I have convinced you to give these a try!  So OF COURSE I'm going to share the resources we used in these lessons!  I created them myself and I'm always wanting to SHARE with you!
No matter which grade you teach, these would be great resources for an introductory lesson!

(Note: This one has straight lines too, which I definitely recommend using!)

UPDATE!  NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW NEW! UPDATE!
I just created this activity for a class to try out in case you'd like to use it!  Here's a peek:

(Which you might want to use for another grade level!)

Here's a reminder.... you can create an account at Ozobot.com and they have a lesson bank with many, many lessons to use with your students!  Remember to ask your science facilitator where the Ozobots are on your campus.  And if they are not available for whatever reason, let me know and I can check some out for you to borrow! Also, maybe you want to create some activities like these, but with different words and pictures... let me know and I can help you with that if you don't already know how!

I wish you a wonderful, fun-filled, restful, sunshiny SPRING BREAK!
